Gynecomastia Correction

(Breast reduction surgery in Men)

Gynecomastia is abnormal enlargement of mammary glands in men. Gynecomastia has been associated with metabolic disorders, steroid use, weight gain, marijuana use, distress in young adolescence, high levels of sex hormone binding protein resulting in decrease levels of free testosterone, medications (e.g. Spironolactone, Digoxin, Furosemide, Risperidone). The treatment of gynecomastia is surgical excision of the excess breast tissue.

Procedure Description

  • Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia, or conscious sedation with local anesthesia
  • Most common procedure involves making an incision around the areola or in the infra-mammary region
  • The excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed
  • A drain may be inserted at the time of surgery if necessary

Recovery

  • Postoperative discomfort is controlled with oral medications
  • A support dressing is to be worn after surgery for several weeks to reduce the swelling
  • Sutures will remain in place and are removed 7 days after surgery
  • Sports activities may be resumed in six weeks or longer
