Lipoplasty, Liposculpture (Liposuction)

Liposuction involves removing excess fat while simultaneously re-contouring the body into a more aesthetically pleasing shape. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or weight loss. Lipo-sculpture can help remove persistent excess fat e.g. along neck, knees, abdomen, flanks (love handles), outer or inner thigh, buttock, hips, male breast, arms, or back. The procedure can be performed in multiple areas. Final results depend upon the patient complying with a healthy diet and exercise in order to avoid weight gain.

Procedure Description

  • Procedure may be performed under local, conscious sedation, or general anesthesia
  • Small incision is made along natural skin folds
  • Tumescent fluid is placed in the fatty area that will be subsequently removed (Tumescent solution provides anesthesia and limits the blood loss)
  • Fat is then suctioned via the suction cannula
  • Incision sites may be closed with sutures or left open to drain
  • Compression garment is worn for 4-6 weeks post-op
  • Procedure might take approximately 2-4 hours

Recovery

  • Patient is encouraged to walk every 2 hours the first two nights
  • There might be some initial blood tinged drainage, swelling and bruising
  • Swelling and numbness will subside anywhere between a few weeks to a few months
  • Compression garment will help with swelling, discomfort, bruising, and aids in skin retraction
  • Sutures are removed post-op day 7
  • Patient should avoid vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for 2-4 weeks
