Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)

Rhinoplasty is an operation designed to improve the size and shape of the nose. The bone and the cartilage of the nose are carefully contoured in order to be more in harmony with the rest of the face. In addition to the aesthetic enhancement of the nose, Rhinoplasty helps to correct nasal trauma as well as congenital defects. Deformities, which may cause breathing problems along with some types of sinus disorders, can be corrected simultaneously.

Rhinoplasty can be either an open or a closed procedure; closed Rhinoplasty tends to result in a decreased appearance of scars, carries a lower risk of edema, and at times can be easier and quicker to recover from. Most secondary revision Rhinoplasty is performed via an open approach.

Procedure Description

  • The procedure takes one to two hours
  • Rhinoplasty is performed under local anesthesia or sedation
  • Your surgeon will determine whether you are a better candidate for the open Rhinoplasty or the closed Rhinoplasty
  • In regards to open Rhinoplasty, incisions are placed both on the columella and within the inside of the nose. During closed Rhinoplasty, all incisions are placed inside the nose
  • Wide nostrils can be made narrower
  • Large nasal tips can be reduced in size
  • The tip of the nose can be raised or lowered
  • An unwanted nasal hump can be smoothed out

Recovery

  • Patients should refrain from smoking
  • Patient is given antibiotics, analgesics and steroids to aid the recovery process
  • Corrective glasses should be taped up to prevent putting pressure on the nose
  • External cast is typically removed after a week
  • Periorbital bruising should heal in about 2 weeks
  • External sutures are typically removed in 5-7 days.
  • Antibiotics are to be applied on the wound 2-3 times a day
  • Hydrogen peroxide solution should be used to gently clean any crusting
  • Swelling should disappear within a few weeks
